You are booking Beijing to Kunming. Trip.com shows three options: Air China at ¥820, China Eastern at ¥760, and Yunnan Airlines at ¥590. Which do you pick? In most cases: the cheapest non-stop on your preferred departure time. Brand loyalty matters less in Chinese domestic aviation than in most markets. The experience differences are real but narrow. Here is what actually differs. Full domestic flights context: China Domestic Flights Guide.

When the Choice Actually Matters
Flying from Beijing
Air China has the most slots at Beijing Capital. For morning departures and popular routes, Air China often has the best frequency. If you collect Star Alliance miles, Air China accrues them.
Flying from Shanghai
China Eastern dominates Shanghai Pudong. Their connection network through Pudong is the strongest for onward routes. For international connections from Shanghai, China Eastern has the most aligned schedule.
Flying to or from southern China
China Southern’s Guangzhou hub is the best connected point for routes to Yunnan, Hainan, Guangxi, and Southeast Asia. Guangzhou Baiyun is China Southern’s fortress and their schedule there is extremely dense.
Summer Delay Risk
Both China Eastern (Shanghai hub) and China Southern (Guangzhou hub) are exposed to summer convective weather that causes cascading delays. June through September, morning departures are significantly more reliable than afternoon ones at both hubs. Air China’s Beijing hub is less affected by summer convective weather (Beijing has different storm patterns). For summer travel, Air China’s on-time performance at its hub is meaningfully better. For route-specific data, the Civil Aviation Administration of China publishes monthly punctuality rankings.
Budget Carrier Options
Several subsidiaries and regional carriers offer meaningfully lower fares on specific routes:
- Shenzhen Airlines (China Southern subsidiary): Shenzhen-based routes, Pearl River Delta network.
- Xiamen Air (China Southern subsidiary): Fujian and coastal southeast routes.
- West Air (HNA Group): Southwest China, budget fares to Chengdu and Chongqing.
- Ruili Airlines: Yunnan routes at competitive prices.
