Beijing in October looks like Beijing is supposed to look. The China National Tourism Administration ranks it the city’s best month for visitors. The summer haze has gone. The sky is a specific shade of deep blue that locals call ‘北京蓝’ (Beijing blue). The trees on the Mutianyu ridge turn orange. The air feels sharp and clean. October is the month that makes Beijing photographs look the way Beijing photographs look. There is one catch. For the full Beijing guide: Beijing Travel Guide.

The Golden Week Problem
October 1 is China’s National Day. The seven-day national holiday (October 1 to 7) triggers the world’s largest seasonal migration. The Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, and major Great Wall sections all hit their daily visitor limits early on every day of Golden Week. If you must travel during Golden Week, book every site ticket the moment they become available (typically 30 days ahead). Book hotels immediately. October Highlights
Great Wall autumn colour
The hillside forests at Mutianyu typically peak in mid to late October. Ginkgo trees turn yellow. Oak and maple turn red and orange. On a clear October day the view from the wall ridge over autumn forest is exceptional. The best light is in the afternoon when the low sun angles across the hillside.
Ginkgo season
Beijing’s ginkgo trees turn bright yellow in late October and early November. The best viewing: Yuyuantan Park, Diaoyutai Ginkgo Avenue, and the grounds around the Temple of Heaven. The yellow carpet of fallen ginkgo leaves on grey stone pathways is a classic Beijing autumn image.
