Beijing’s entrance fees are real and they add up. The Palace Museum manages the Forbidden City and sets entry at ¥60 peak season. The Forbidden City, Great Wall, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, and Ming Tombs together cost around ¥230 for the main tickets alone. But some of the best experiences in Beijing cost almost nothing. Here is the complete list of what to see and do without significant spending. For the full Beijing context: Beijing Travel Guide.

The Best Free Morning in Beijing
Wake up at 6:30 AM. Walk to the nearest park. In the hutong area: Jingshan Park or Beihai Park. In the morning, the parks fill with retired Beijingers doing the same things their grandparents did: tai chi, sword form, group dancing, calligraphy with water on stone slabs, opera singing, diabolo. This is the free version of the Temple of Heaven experience. After 90 minutes in the park, walk to a nearby street stall for jianbing (¥10 to ¥12). That is your whole morning and the total cost is under ¥20. For context on costs in China: How Much Does China Cost?.
