You walk into Jingshan Park in the last week of March. The hill is covered in pink and white plum blossoms. Elderly Beijingers are photographing them with phones raised high. A group of school children on a field trip runs between the trees. The air is cool and sharp, 15 degrees and slightly damp. Behind the blossom trees, the Forbidden City roofline is visible in the distance. This is Beijing in spring, and it is very good. For the full Beijing guide: Beijing Travel Guide.

Sandstorm Season

Northwest winds carry dust from the Gobi Desert and Mongolian Plateau into Beijing in March and April. A full sandstorm (called a haboob-type event) turns the sky orange and coats every surface. They typically last 1 to 2 days before clearing. Less severe dust events (hazy yellow air rather than a full orange sky) are more common and less dramatic. The Chinese meteorological service provides 7-day forecasts. Check weather.com or the local Beijing weather app before planning outdoor days. If a major sandstorm day coincides with your Great Wall visit, move the wall to the following day.

April vs October

October gets the slight edge for outdoor sightseeing in Beijing. The air is cleaner more consistently (rains in August have washed the atmosphere), the sandstorm risk is gone, and the autumn colour at Mutianyu adds something April cannot offer. April wins for blossoms and slightly lower site ticket prices. For the comprehensive seasonal guide: Best Time to Visit China.

Frequently Asked Questions

April is one of Beijing’s best months: comfortable temperatures (15 to 22°C), spring blossoms, and lower crowds than peak summer or Golden Week. The main environmental consideration is sandstorm season: occasional dust storms blowing in from the Gobi Desert occur in March and April. They are dramatic but short-lived.

Jingshan Park (pink plum blossoms, late March), Yuyuantan Park (cherry blossoms, early April), and the hutong neighborhood around Tanzhe Temple (magnolia, April). The blossoms in Jingshan Park are free with the ¥2 park entry. Yuyuantan Cherry Blossom Festival runs late March to mid-April and requires a purchased festival ticket (¥30).

Layering is important. Mornings are 8 to 12°C, afternoons reach 18 to 22°C. A medium jacket and layers. Rain is possible in April (more so than October). A packable rain layer is useful. Full packing guide: China Packing List.

October (mid-month onwards) has the edge due to clearer skies, autumn colour, and lower likelihood of sand or rain. April is excellent and has the advantage of blossoms. Both are dramatically better than summer (June to August) for most visitors.

Sandstorms (sand and dust carried from the Gobi Desert by northwest winds) are possible in March and April. They are becoming less frequent as China’s afforestation programs expand. But they still occur. If a storm is forecast, outdoor sites are uncomfortable for 1 to 3 days. Use the Chinese weather app (中国天气) or Weather.com to track forecasts before major outdoor days.
