Jiuzhaigou: What You Need to Know

Timed-entry tickets

Jiuzhaigou requires timed-entry tickets booked in advance. Entry ¥169 plus shuttle bus ¥90. Book via WeChat mini-program or Trip.com. During peak season (May, summer, autumn), tickets sell out weeks ahead. Book as soon as your dates are confirmed. No walk-up sales during peak periods.

The valley

Jiuzhaigou is a 40 km valley in the Minshan Mountains. The water in the lakes is coloured turquoise, blue, and green by calcium carbonate deposits. Official shuttle buses run between viewpoints. You can walk the main trail between stops or take buses. Allow a full day. The highest and most remote parts of the valley are the most dramatic.

Leshan Giant Buddha

The UNESCO World Heritage Site at Leshan is one of the most impressive individual monuments in China. The Buddha is 71 metres tall, carved into a cliff face, visible from the Minjiang River. Two ways to see it: stand at the top looking down (crowds, partial view), or take a boat from the river dock (full view, ¥70). The boat is the right choice. Getting there: public buses from Chengdu Xinnanmen station (2 hours, ¥50) or DiDi.

Giant Panda Base

8am arrival is important. Pandas are fed at 9am and are most active in the morning. By 11am many are sleeping. The base has giant pandas, red pandas, and Qinling pandas. Allow 2 to 3 hours. Metro Line 3 north to Xiongmao Dadao station, then bus or DiDi (15 minutes). Full Chengdu guide: Chengdu Travel Guide. Panda volunteer programs: Chengdu Panda Volunteer Guide.
