Unlike Beijing day trips (which mostly mean the Great Wall), Shanghai day trips offer genuine variety: classical garden cities, water towns, and natural landscapes. Yes, as a half-day trip. It is the most accessible of the Yangtze Delta water towns from Shanghai. Canal boats, stone arch bridges, traditional houses. The Kezhi Garden is the main paid site (¥30). Arrive before 10am to see it before tour groups.

G-train from Shanghai Hongqiao to Suzhou: 25 to 35 minutes. ¥39. No advance booking needed. Trains run every 15 to 20 minutes from early morning. Suzhou railway station is centrally located.

Technically possible but very rushed. Both require at least 4 hours on the ground to be worthwhile. A very long day combining both is doable but leaves you exhausted. Better to pick one and do it properly.

Tongli (同里) is a well-preserved water town 80 km west of Shanghai, quieter than Zhujiajiao and more atmospheric. Reached by bus from Suzhou (40 minutes) or shuttle from Shanghai (2.5 hours). The Tuisi Garden (UNESCO listed) is the main attraction. Best as an extension of a Suzhou day trip.
