Most tourists go to Badaling. It is the closest section to Beijing and the most heavily promoted. It is also the most crowded place in China on a summer weekend. Go to Mutianyu instead. The scenery is more dramatic. The cable car handles the difficult part. The toboggan on the way down has been making children ecstatic since 1990. It is 30 extra minutes in a car. It is worth it. Mutianyu: How to Do It
Getting there
Private car from Beijing is the most practical option for families and seniors: 90 to 120 minutes from central Beijing. Public bus H23 from Dongzhimen runs less frequently and takes longer but works for budget travelers. Most visitors arrange transport through their hotel concierge or a tour platform. The Mutianyu official website has current transport and pricing information.
The cable car
Two gondola cable cars and one chairlift operate at Mutianyu. The gondola is the best option for seniors and children uncomfortable with open chairlifts. Cable car up: approximately ¥65. Toboggan down: approximately ¥60. Cable car both ways also available. The toboggan is a seated slide in a metal channel with a brake handle. Children aged 5 and above handle it well. Not recommended for anyone with back problems.
On the wall
The restored section at Mutianyu runs about 2.2 km with 23 watchtowers. The wall surface is paved stone. Some sections are steeper than others. Most visitors walk a portion, stop at a watchtower or two, and return to the cable car. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours on the wall itself.
With Young Children
- Arrive before 9:00 AM to avoid crowds even in shoulder season.
- Bring a carrier or backpack for children under 4. Strollers cannot be used on the wall surface.
- The toboggan is the highlight for ages 5+. Queue time varies from 10 to 45 minutes.
- Set a walking goal. Walk to the third tower and turn back. A concrete target helps.
- Bring their own snacks. Food at the wall is expensive and limited.
With Seniors
- Take the cable car both ways if there is any concern about descent. The toboggan is not suitable for back problems.
- Wear non-slip shoes. Stone surface is uneven and slippery when damp.
- Rest at the watchtowers. They have covered areas and benches.
- Visit in October (after the 8th) for autumn colour, clear air, and manageable crowds.
- Consider a half-day private guide who paces the day appropriately.
