Shanghai Metro Guide 2026: Lines, Fares & Tourist Tips

Shanghai’s metro has 21 lines and 508 stations. You need Line 2 and Line 10. Everything else follows from those two. Here is the guide.

Shanghai has the world’s longest metro network by track length, per the Shanghai Metro Authority. 21 lines. 508 stations. It runs from one airport to the other on a single line. People’s Square: The Interchange

People’s Square station is where Lines 1, 2, and 8 converge. It is the busiest station in the Shanghai metro. At rush hour, the transfers between lines involve long corridors and large crowds. When possible, avoid People’s Square during 7:30 to 9:30am and 5:30 to 7:30pm. The station has English signs throughout.

How to Pay

Alipay transit QR code: fastest and most convenient. Open Alipay, tap the Transport icon, your QR code appears. Hold it to the scanner at the turnstile. Walk through. Line 2. It runs east-west from Pudong Airport to Hongqiao Airport, passing through People’s Square, Nanjing Road, Jing’an Temple, and Lujiazui. Approximately 80% of tourist movement in Shanghai uses Line 2 at some point.

Very crowded during rush hours (7:30 to 9:30am, 5:30 to 7:30pm) on Lines 1, 2, 4, and 10. People’s Square station (the main interchange of Lines 1, 2, and 8) is the most congested station in the system. Avoid traveling through it at rush hour.

Most lines run until 11pm to midnight. Line 2 runs until midnight. The first train is around 5:30 to 6:00 AM on most lines. For late-night travel after midnight: DiDi is the alternative.
