Is the Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge Worth the Hype?

The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge is 430 metres long, 300 metres above the canyon floor, and the world’s highest glass-bottomed bridge. Here is what the experience is actually like and whether it is worth it.

zhangjiajie glass bridge

The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge opened in 2016 and set three world records: longest glass-bottomed bridge (430 metres), highest glass-bottomed bridge (300 metres above canyon floor), and most glass panels in a bridge structure. A Chinese film crew dropped a sports car onto a panel during the opening ceremony to demonstrate the glass strength. The panels did not break. For the Zhangjiajie context: Zhangjiajie Travel Guide.

What the Experience Is Like

Before you step on

Shoe covers are provided at the bridge entrance (to prevent scratching the glass panels). Put them on over your shoes. The first section of the bridge has metal grating under your feet: you cannot see through. The glass panels begin after the first 50 metres.

On the bridge

The glass panels are large enough to look directly through to the canyon floor below. At midspan the bridge swings very slightly in wind. Most visitors grip the railings in the center section. The railing itself is solid steel: perfectly safe. The physical reaction most people report is not rational fear but a primal response to looking down 300 metres through a transparent surface. People who walk fast through the center miss the views. Walk slowly, stop, and look properly.

After the bridge

The bridge connects two canyon cliff faces. On the far side, a trail descends into the Grand Canyon itself. The canyon hike is included in the ¥138 ticket. The walk takes 1 to 2 hours through the canyon bottom with the canyon walls above you. It is less dramatic than the bridge but provides a different perspective on the scale.

Is It Worth It?

The Glass Bridge is worth adding to your Zhangjiajie trip with one condition: manage expectations about the surrounding scenery. The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon is a gorge with steep walls and some rock formations. It is attractive but not comparable to the sandstone pillar landscape of the National Forest Park. The bridge experience itself is genuinely unlike anything else. Standing in the center of a 430-metre glass bridge 300 metres above a canyon floor is something you will remember. The canyon below it is background.

A 430-metre glass-bottomed suspension bridge spanning the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon at 300 metres height. When it opened in 2016, it was simultaneously the world’s longest and highest glass bridge. The Grand Canyon Scenic Area is a separate attraction from both Tianmen Mountain and the National Forest Park.

Yes, for most people, especially in the middle. The glass panels are clear enough to see directly to the canyon floor 300 metres below. Even people who do not consider themselves afraid of heights report a strong physical reaction. Walking slowly in the center is noticeably more intense than walking near the railing.

¥138 for bridge access. Additional activities (bungee jumping, canyon hike, zipline) are sold separately. Tickets are time-slotted with a daily visitor cap. Book in advance online or through your hotel.

Worth it if: you want the experience and the views. Not worth it if: you are coming only for the scenery. The bridge view is dramatic but the Grand Canyon scenery below is less spectacular than the national park pillars. The bridge experience itself is unique in the world. The canyon scenery around it is not Zhangjiajie’s best.

Technically possible but very tiring. The Grand Canyon is south of the city, the National Forest Park is north. Budget a separate half-day or full day for the Glass Bridge.
