2-Week China Itineraries: Classic & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Two weeks in China. The classic version goes Beijing, Xi’an, Chengdu, Guilin, Shanghai. The alternative goes deeper into western China. Here are both, day by day.

2 weeks in china

Two weeks is enough for a complete China experience if you choose 5 cities and stay at least 2 nights in each. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms visa-free access for 50+ nationalities simplifying multi-city planning. The classic circuit is below. The alternative western China route follows it. Both work. The classic is easier to navigate. The western route is less traveled and more varied. For a shorter version: 7-Day China Itinerary.

Key Planning Decisions

Train or fly between cities?

Beijing to Xi’an: train (4.5h, metro-connected, reliable). Xi’an to Chengdu: train (3.5h, scenic mountain section, better than flying). Chengdu to Guilin or Yunnan: fly (no competitive direct train option). Guilin or Yunnan to Shanghai: fly. Full comparison: China High-Speed Rail Guide.

What to book in advance

  • Trains: as soon as the 15-day booking window opens for each leg.
  • Forbidden City and Terracotta Warriors: book via WeChat mini-program as soon as your dates are confirmed.
  • Giant Panda Base (Chengdu): book entry tickets online. Peak days sell out.
  • Flights (domestic): 4 to 6 weeks ahead for best prices.
  • Hotels: 2 to 4 weeks ahead. Earlier for Golden Week and Chinese New Year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Beijing (3 nights), Xi’an (2 nights), Chengdu (2 nights), Guilin/Yangshuo (2 nights), Shanghai (3 nights). This covers the Golden Triangle plus two outstanding additions: giant pandas and karst scenery. Total: 12 nights, 14 days including travel days.

High-speed train for Beijing to Xi’an and Xi’an to Chengdu. Fly for Chengdu to Guilin and Guilin to Shanghai. The trains are more comfortable for the first two legs. Chengdu to Guilin (no direct HSR) and Guilin to Shanghai (6+ hours) are better by air. Full rail guide: China High-Speed Rail.

Only if you drop one of the main cities. Yunnan requires at least 3 nights minimum to see anything properly. If Yunnan is the priority, replace Guilin with Yunnan and fly Chengdu to Kunming. Full Yunnan itinerary: Yunnan Itinerary.

Yes for trains, major site tickets, and hotel in peak season. Train tickets open 15 days before travel. Book immediately. Forbidden City and Terracotta Warriors require advance booking year-round. Hotels can usually be booked 2 to 4 weeks ahead except during Golden Week and Chinese New Year.

Not if you limit to 5 cities with 2 to 3 nights each. The mistake is trying to see 8 cities in 14 days. Five cities done properly is a complete China experience. Six starts to feel like transit.
