At 9:15 AM you are 4 metres from a giant panda sitting in a tree eating bamboo. It has been eating for 20 minutes and will continue for another 20. It has not acknowledged your presence once. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding houses over 80 giant pandas. It is the most important panda conservation facility in the world. The timing of your arrival determines everything. Inside the Base
Giant panda enclosures
Main giant panda area is near the entrance. Sun enclosures (open air) in the morning. By late morning they move to shaded indoor areas or sleep on high platforms. Mother and Cub enclosure has the longest queues when cubs are in residence.
Red pandas
Separate area northeast of the main zone. Smaller, fox-like, active throughout the day. Walk along elevated wooden platforms at head height. If giant pandas have all retreated by the time you arrive, head to the red panda area.
The Alternative: Bifengxia in Ya’an
Bifengxia (碧峰峡) in Ya’an is 100 km southwest of Chengdu. The setting is mountain bamboo forest. Crowds are a fraction of the Chengdu base. Independent travel is easy: buses from Xinnanmen station to Ya’an city (90 min, ¥50), then local bus or DiDi to Bifengxia (30 min). Ya’an is known as Rainy City (雨城) because it rains frequently. Pack a waterproof.
If you have a full day in Ya’an: combine Bifengxia with Niubei Mountain (牛背山), famous for its cloud sea. On clear mornings after rain, a solid layer of cloud fills the valleys below while you stand on the ridge above. One of the most striking views in Sichuan.
