Huangshan rewards preparation. The UNESCO Huangshan World Heritage Site covers 154 square kilometres of scenic area. The scenic area covers 160 square kilometres and has more than 60 km of paved stone path. The three cable cars reduce the elevation gain but cannot eliminate the walking: even a day visitor who takes every cable car will walk 15,000 to 20,000 steps. A 2-day hiker who descends on foot will cover significantly more.
This is not a criticism of the mountain. The stone paths through the granite peaks and twisted pines are the experience. Here is how to plan them intelligently. For the full Huangshan context: Huangshan Travel Guide.

The Standard 2-Day Route
Day 1: Back Mountain and West Sea Grand Canyon
- Take the Yungu Cable Car (东部, east route) from the cable car station near Yungu Temple. 8 minutes. Exit at White Goose Ridge.
- Walk northeast to Begin-to-Believe Peak (始信峰, 1,683m). 30 minutes. Outstanding views of granite columns and the canyon below.
- Return to the main path and walk west along the ridge toward Beihai Scenic Area. 1 hour. The path passes through the Back Mountain’s most iconic sections. Lion Peak (狮子峰) area for the best cloud sea views from Refreshing Terrace (清凉台).
- From Beihai Hotel area, walk southwest toward West Sea Grand Canyon. The canyon entrance is about 30 minutes from the hotel.
- Descend the West Sea Grand Canyon (2 to 3 hours down, 1 to 2 hours back up or take the Xihai cable car). The canyon narrows dramatically at the bottom. The granite walls rise 100 to 200 metres on both sides.
- Return to Xihai Hotel for the night. Sunset from Cloud Dispelling Pavilion (排云亭) near the hotel: one of the best sunset viewpoints on the mountain.
Day 2: Sunrise and Descent
- Rise 45 minutes before sunrise. Check the time the previous evening.
- Walk from Beihai or Xihai Hotel to the best viewpoint for that season. Bright Summit (光明顶, 1,860m): 15 to 45 minutes depending on hotel. Best all-year-round sunrise viewpoint.
- Watch the sunrise above or through the cloud sea.
- After sunrise: take the main path south toward Jade Screen Scenic Area. Pass Flying-over Rock (飞来石) and the Cloud Dispelling Pavilion.
- Stop at the Guest Welcoming Pine (迎客松) near Yuping cable car station. The iconic tree. The reason for every photograph.
- Take the Yuping Cable Car down to the west base area. Or hike down the Front Mountain on foot: 1,500 steps, 3 to 4 hours, on a steep but well-maintained stone path.

Practical Hiking Notes
- Weather can change within hours. Pack a rain layer even if the morning is clear. The mountain creates its own weather.
- All paths are paved granite steps. They are slippery when wet. Grip soles are essential in rain.
- Trekking poles help significantly on the long descents. Rent at cable car stations (¥10 to ¥20).
- Water and food are available on the mountain at prices significantly higher than at the base. Bring snacks from Tangkou or bring your own.
- The Guest Welcoming Pine has its own security guard. Do not touch it.
