huangshan hiking trails

Huangshan rewards preparation. The UNESCO Huangshan World Heritage Site covers 154 square kilometres of scenic area. The scenic area covers 160 square kilometres and has more than 60 km of paved stone path. The three cable cars reduce the elevation gain but cannot eliminate the walking: even a day visitor who takes every cable car will walk 15,000 to 20,000 steps. A 2-day hiker who descends on foot will cover significantly more.

This is not a criticism of the mountain. The stone paths through the granite peaks and twisted pines are the experience. Here is how to plan them intelligently. For the full Huangshan context: Huangshan Travel Guide.
