Guilin vs Zhangjiajie: Choosing China’s Best Scenic Destination

Guilin has the Li River and misty karst peaks you cycle through. Zhangjiajie has the sandstone pillars that James Cameron used for Avatar. One is about rivers and countryside. The other is about mountains and vertigo.

guilin vs zhangjiajie

The landscapes look nothing alike. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites or candidates. Guilin’s karst towers are smooth limestone formations rising from flat river plains, softened by mist and water. Zhangjiajie’s formations are sharp quartz sandstone columns, some over 200 metres tall, rising from dense forest. One is the classical Chinese painting landscape. The other is the landscape of alien imagination.
