The classical Chinese landscape painters of the Song dynasty (960 to 1279 AD) were observing real landscapes. National Geographic has named Guilin among Asia’s great natural wonders. They did not invent the style of mountains emerging from mist. They observed it in places like Guilin and painted what they saw.
In April, the Li River produces exactly that: karst peaks appearing and disappearing in morning cloud, the river surface flat and grey-green, the air warm and damp. It is less photogenic in the Instagram sense and more beautiful in the actual sense. For the full Guilin guide: Guilin and Yangshuo Guide.
April Weather
| Week | Temperature | Conditions |
| April 1 to 7 | 18 to 21 degrees / 14 degrees | Mist common in morning. Occasional rain. Bamboo green. |
| April 8 to 15 | 20 to 22 degrees / 15 degrees | Similar. River running higher. Terraces flooding at Longji. |
| April 16 to 23 | 22 to 24 degrees / 16 degrees | Warmer. More afternoon showers. Lush green landscape. |
| April 24 to 30 | 23 to 25 degrees / 17 degrees | Transitioning toward the wetter May to June peak. |
The Mist Effect
The mist at Guilin in April comes from warm humid air meeting cooler mountain air overnight. It typically settles in the valleys between the peaks in early morning and burns off by 10 to 11am. The window of 7am to 10am is when the landscape looks most like a painting.
At Xingping village, the river in early morning mist with the 20-yuan peaks barely visible through the cloud is one of the most striking landscapes in China. At Longji Rice Terraces in April, the newly flooded paddies reflect the cloudy sky in repeating steps up the mountainside.
Practical Implications
Li River cruise in April
The cruise runs in all weather unless the river level is dangerously high. April rain does not cancel it. The scenery on a cloudy April day is atmospheric rather than dramatic. If you specifically want clear-sky photos from the upper deck, book October instead. If atmosphere matters more than sharpness, April is fine. Comparison: Li River Cruise vs Bamboo Raft.
Longji in April
April is one of the two best times for Longji Rice Terraces. The terraces are newly flooded by April rains and mirror the sky in stepped pools. This is the most photographed version of Longji. Visit in the third or fourth week of April for the fullest flooding. Full guide: Longji Rice Terraces Guide.
Cycling in April
The Yulong River valley cycling routes in Yangshuo are at their most green in April. Wet stone can be slippery on descents. An e-bike (rather than a pedal bicycle) handles the wet conditions more safely. The rice paddies are flooded and reflective in April, giving the valley a different character from autumn. Crowds in April
April is the shoulder season before summer peak. Golden Week is in October (not April) and Chinese New Year is in January or February. April crowds at Guilin and Yangshuo are moderate. Weekends are busier than weekdays. Longji at a weekday morning in April is remarkably peaceful compared to October.
