Chongqing sits at the edge of some of China’s most dramatic karst and mountain terrain. Within 2.5 hours of the city are three UNESCO-listed or UNESCO-candidate sites and landscapes that would be the headline attraction of any other Chinese city. Most visitors to Chongqing miss all of them. Here are the six worth taking. For the full Chongqing guide: Chongqing Travel Guide.

Wulong: The Dramatic One
Wulong Karst (武隆喀斯特) is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of extraordinary limestone formations. The centerpiece is Tiansheng Three Natural Bridges (天生三桥): three massive natural rock arches spanning a gorge, each over 100 metres tall. The largest (Tianlong Bridge) spans 300 metres. The gorge floor between them is accessible by elevator and a carved stone path. Also here: Fairy Meadow (仙女山), a high plateau grassland at 2,000 metres elevation that is dramatically different from the lowland city 2 hours away. In summer, Chinese tourists flock to Fairy Meadow specifically to escape the Chongqing heat. Wulong also appeared in the James Bond film Skyfall and the Transformers franchise.
Getting to Wulong
G-train from Chongqing North to Wulong station: approximately 1.5 hours, ¥60. From Wulong station: bus or taxi to Tiansheng Three Bridges scenic area, 40 minutes. Entry: ¥135 for the Three Bridges. Separate tickets for Fairy Meadow if combining. Full day required. Rail guide: China High-Speed Rail.
Dazu Rock Carvings: The Underrated UNESCO Site
The UNESCO World Heritage Dazu Rock Carvings consist of over 50,000 sculptures carved into cliff faces across 75 sites in Dazu County between the 7th and 17th centuries. The two main sites open to visitors are Baoding Mountain (宝顶山) and Beishan (北山). Baoding Mountain is the larger and more impressive: a 31-metre reclining Buddha carved into a curved cliff face, surrounded by elaborate scenes from Buddhist and Daoist narrative.
The carvings are remarkably well-preserved because the cliff overhang protects them from rain. Many still retain original paint. Most visitors to Chongqing do not know these exist. That is their loss.
Getting to Dazu
G-train from Chongqing North to Dazu station: approximately 40 minutes, ¥30. From Dazu station: taxi or bus to Baoding Mountain scenic area, 15 to 30 minutes. Entry to Baoding Mountain: ¥115. Combined ticket for Baoding + Beishan: ¥160. Allow 3 to 4 hours at the main site. Easy half-day trip or full day with both sites.
Jinfo Mountain
Jinfo Mountain (金佛山, Golden Buddha Mountain) sits 130 km south of Chongqing at 2,238 metres elevation. Cable car from the base: 20 minutes. At the summit: cloud sea conditions similar to Huangshan, ancient forest, and Buddhist temples. Summer is the most popular season (cool air compared to Chongqing city). Bus from Nanping bus station: approximately 1.5 hours. Entry: ¥150 including cable car.
