October in Hangzhou begins with the osmanthus. The small yellow flowers appear on the trees throughout the city in late September and the fragrance arrives before you see them: sweet, clean, and faintly apricot-like. By mid-October, West Lake’s hillsides are catching the autumn light. The temperature has fallen to something you can actually walk in comfortably. The tourists from Golden Week have gone home.
This is the Hangzhou that residents experience. For the full Hangzhou guide: Hangzhou Travel Guide.

Osmanthus Season
Late September to mid-October is when Hangzhou smells like nowhere else in China. Osmanthus trees (桂花, guìhuā) produce small yellow-white flowers with an intensely sweet fragrance. Hangzhou has more osmanthus trees than any other city in China and is known as the City of Osmanthus. The fragrance is strongest on still mornings and warm evenings.
The best areas: Manjuelong Village (慢桂弄, 30 minutes south of the lake by bicycle), Huagang Park on the south lakeshore, and the Su Causeway.
Osmanthus Longjing tea
October is also the season when tea shops produce osmanthus-infused Longjing (桂花龙井). Fresh osmanthus flowers are blended with autumn-harvest Longjing leaves. The result is a delicate, floral green tea that tastes specifically of Hangzhou in October. Buy it at proper tea shops, not at lakeside tourist stalls.
West Lake in October
The lake in October catches the lower-angle autumn sun differently than summer. Morning light hits the Su Causeway willows from the east with a gold tint. Afternoon light on the hills west of the lake is warm and sharp. The hand-rowed boat experience (¥150/hour from Huagang Park dock) is at its best in October: clear water, warm light, comfortable temperature. The lotus flowers that crowd the lake in summer have faded, leaving a cleaner view of the water and the distant hills.
