Taking the High-Speed Train from Hong Kong to Mainland China

West Kowloon Station connects Hong Kong directly to Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and mainland China by G-train. Immigration is done at the departure station, not at the border. Here is how the whole system works.

hong kong bullet train

West Kowloon Station opened in 2018 and transformed the connection between Hong Kong and mainland China. Before it, crossing required reaching Hung Hom station, taking a slower train to the border, walking through immigration, and finding a different train on the mainland side. Now: take the MTR to West Kowloon, clear immigration in one place, and board a G-train that will have you in Guangzhou in 47 minutes, Shenzhen in 14 minutes, or Beijing in 9 hours.

How It Works

The co-location immigration system

West Kowloon Station uses a unique arrangement: both Hong Kong and mainland immigration are physically located inside the station, on the Hong Kong side of the actual border. This means you complete all formalities in one place before boarding. You will not stop at the border itself. You will not need to change trains. You will arrive in mainland China having already cleared both sets of immigration.

Step by step

  1. Buy your ticket in advance through the MTR app, Trip.com, or at West Kowloon ticket windows. Have your passport ready.
  2. Arrive at West Kowloon Station at least 45 minutes before departure.
  3. Go through Hong Kong exit immigration (show your Hong Kong entry stamp or digital record).
  4. Enter the designated mainland China immigration zone within the station.
  5. Complete mainland China entry immigration (passport, fingerprints, photograph).
  6. Collect your train ticket from the MTR app QR code or the collection machine.
  7. Wait in the departure hall and board your G-train when called.
  8. Sit back. The speed will be obvious within 5 minutes of departure.
