1. Do I need a separate visa for Hong Kong?

Most Western passport holders get 90 days in Hong Kong visa-free, regardless of their China visa status. Citizens of the US, UK, EU, Canada, and Australia do not need a visa for Hong Kong. Your China visa does not cover Hong Kong and your Hong Kong entry does not count as a China entry. They are treated as separate immigration territories at every crossing point.

2. Does my Chinese SIM card work in Hong Kong?

Chinese mainland SIM cards work in Hong Kong but at roaming rates, which are expensive. Most travelers who are spending significant time in Hong Kong buy a local SIM at the airport (around HK$80 for 3 to 5 days unlimited data) or use an eSIM that covers both mainland China and Hong Kong. Check with your mainland SIM provider before crossing.

3. Does Alipay and WeChat Pay work in Hong Kong?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but differently from the mainland. Hong Kong has its own Alipay HK and WeChat Pay HK apps that work with local bank accounts. Your mainland Alipay works at many HK businesses but not all. You will need a physical credit or debit card as backup. Octopus card (the local transit card, HK$150 including deposit) works on the MTR metro and at most convenience stores and restaurants.

4. Can I use my China VPN in Hong Kong?

You do not need a VPN in Hong Kong. The internet in Hong Kong is unrestricted. Google, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and all other blocked-in-mainland apps work normally in Hong Kong. Your mainland VPN is unnecessary and can actually slow your connection.

5. What is the quickest border crossing between Shenzhen and Hong Kong?

Accepted Answer

Lo Wu and Futian (Lok Ma Chau) crossings by MTR are the most common. Futian is newer, less crowded, and connects directly to the MTR. Shenzhen Bay crossing is good if you are traveling by car or coach from western Shenzhen. For the high-speed train: West Kowloon station connects directly to cities including Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Beijing without a separate border crossing stop.
