Xiamen sits at 24 degrees north latitude, roughly the same as Miami. The climate is subtropical: warm, humid, and influenced by the Taiwan Strait. The city consistently receives the best urban air quality ratings in mainland China because the sea breeze off the strait constantly clears the air. This makes Xiamen genuinely more pleasant to breathe in than any northern Chinese city in any season. For the Xiamen overview: Xiamen Travel Guide.

Typhoon Season
Typhoons form in the Pacific and track northwest toward China and Taiwan, frequently crossing the Fujian coast. Xiamen’s exposure to the Taiwan Strait means the city is a direct path for storms tracking north along the coast. Most typhoons are fast-moving and cause 1 to 2 days of heavy rain and wind before passing. A direct typhoon hit is rare and the city is well-prepared. The practical impact for travelers: Gulangyu ferry may close, outdoor activities are unsafe, and travel connections may be disrupted. Check the 7-day forecast before visiting in August or September.
The Four Seasons in Practice
October to December: the best window
The three months after the summer typhoon season are Xiamen’s finest. The air is the clearest of the year. Temperatures are comfortable for walking and cycling. The beach at Gulangyu and Huandao Road is accessible without the summer crowds. October 1 to 7 (Golden Week) has high domestic tourism, but from October 8 onwards the city returns to its normal pleasant state.
March to May: spring
The second recommended window. Temperatures rise through the range of 16 to 28 degrees. Azaleas bloom in April. Rain is more frequent than autumn but not overwhelming. The Gulangyu gardens and the hillside around Nanputuo Temple are at their most green.
