You sit down at a restaurant in Chengdu with your nine-year-old. The China National Tourism Administration actively promotes family tourism with child-friendly site pricing. Within three minutes, an elderly woman from the next table has given your child a piece of fruit, ruffled their hair, and is trying to show you photos of her own grandchildren. This is traveling in China with children. The warmth is real and consistent. The logistics require planning. This is the 14-day family plan. City by City for Families
Beijing (Days 1 to 3)
The Forbidden City is more impressive for children than most parents expect. The scale, the hundreds of rooms, the Lion statues. Older children engage with the history. Younger ones are amazed by the physical scale. Keep the visit to 2 to 2.5 hours and leave before energy drops. Great Wall at Mutianyu: cable car handles the difficult part. Toboggan back down delights children aged 5 and above. Beijing Zoo is a backup option on a rest day (metro Line 4 to Beijing Zoo station).
Xi’an (Days 4 to 6)
The Terracotta Warriors work well for children aged 7 and above. Younger children find it less engaging without context. The Muslim Quarter food street is universally successful: sweet pomegranate juice, fried bread, lamb skewers, and the energy of an outdoor market. City wall bike ride: child seats and tandem bikes available for rent at the main gates.
Chengdu (Days 7 to 9)
The Giant Panda Base is the best family stop in China. 80+ giant pandas in residence. Arrive at 8am when they are most active (fed at 9am). Entry ¥55 adults, free for children under 1.2m. Allow 2 to 3 hours. The Chengdu pace is slower than Beijing and Xi’an, which works well mid-trip when families need recovery time. Full guide: Chengdu Travel Guide.
Shanghai (Days 10 to 12)
Shanghai Disneyland is the right call for families with children aged 4 to 12. It is large and well-run. Book tickets and Disney hotel at least 4 weeks ahead for weekends. The Bund walk is accessible to all ages and gives children a visual memory of Shanghai. Yu Garden has enough visual interest for children (stone sculptures, koi ponds, traditional architecture).
Practical Family Notes
- Transport between cities: high-speed train for Beijing to Xi’an (4.5h) and Xi’an to Chengdu (3.5h). Fly Chengdu to Shanghai (2.5h). Trains have more space, Western toilets on board, and no security theater. Rail guide.
- DiDi for city transport. Private car with space for luggage and children. DiDi guide.
- Alipay for payment. Set up before departure. Setup guide.
- Pocket tissues always. Public toilets rarely have paper.
- Build in rest afternoons. Every third day, keep the afternoon free. Children travel better with recovery time.
