Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) Travel Guide 2026: The Cloud-Sea Peaks

Every classical Chinese landscape painting you have ever seen was based on Huangshan. The twisted pines, the granite pillars, the cloud sea. You need 2 days and you need to sleep on the mountain. Here is why and how.

huangshan travel guide

The Song dynasty painter Guo Xi wrote in 1080: ‘The mountain is the same mountain at sunrise and midday and sunset. Each hour it is different. The painter who has not seen this has not seen nature.’ He was describing mountains in general but he might as well have been writing about Huangshan specifically.

The UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage Site was inscribed in 1990 for its dramatic granite peaks, ancient twisted pines, sea of clouds, hot springs, and winter snows. These are called the Five Wonders (五绝). The Chinese landscape painting tradition is largely based on what you see here. Here is how to see it properly.

The Five Wonders

Strange peaks (奇松 and 怪石)

Huangshan’s 72 named peaks are granite formations shaped by millions of years of uplift, freezing, and erosion. The rock does not crumble gradually but breaks in vertical planes, creating sheer, dramatic cliff faces and narrow spires. Many peaks have been named for their shapes: Lotus Peak (莲花峰), Celestial Capital Peak (天都峰), Beginning-to-Believe Peak (始信峰). The shapes that inspired the naming are usually apparent when you stand before them.

Twisted pines (奇松)

Huangshan pine trees grow from cracks in the granite. Because of the extreme growing conditions, they are gnarled, horizontal, and sculpted by wind into shapes that have fascinated painters for centuries. The Guest Welcoming Pine (迎客松) near Yuping cable car station is the most famous individual tree in China: it appears on the official Anhui province seal. The tree is over 1,000 years old and 10 metres tall. It has its own security guard.

Sea of clouds (云海)

When the right temperature and humidity conditions align, a dense layer of cloud forms below the upper peaks. From above, you look out over what appears to be a white ocean, with the granite peaks rising from it as islands. This is the sea of clouds. At sunrise or sunset, when the light angles across it and turns it pink and gold, it is the most beautiful thing most visitors to China will ever see on this trip. Huangshan has over 200 foggy days per year. The cloud sea does not appear on schedule.

Where to Sleep on the Mountain

There are four hotels on the upper mountain. All are expensive by Chinese standards and all book out weeks or months ahead in peak season. Beihai Hotel (北海宾馆): central location, good for sunrise at Lion Peak (10 minutes walk). Xihai Hotel (西海饭店): best positioned for West Sea Grand Canyon. Paiyun Lodge (排云楼): older building, best sunset views from Cloud Dispelling Pavilion steps away. Book through the official Huangshan Tourism WeChat mini-program or through Trip.com. Budget ¥500 to ¥1,500 per room per night. There is no affordable alternative: the experience requires sleeping up here.

The Nearby Ancient Villages

At the foot of the mountain, the Huizhou merchant culture left extraordinary villages that are worth adding to a Huangshan trip. Hongcun (宏村): a UNESCO Heritage village 50 km from Tangkou, famous for the moon-shaped central pond reflecting the whitewashed houses. It appeared in Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Xidi (西递): more compact, also UNESCO-listed, slightly less visited than Hongcun. Both villages are accessible by bus from Tangkou (45 minutes) or by DiDi.
