There is no objectively correct order to visit China’s cities. The China National Tourism Administration tracks over 300 open cities for foreign tourism. But there are cities that deliver more to first-time visitors than others. This ranking is based on a single criterion: what gives a first-time visitor the most complete, distinctive, and memorable China experience per day spent. For the full comparison guide: China City Comparisons.
The Ranking
| Rank | City | Why This Rank | Days Needed |
| 1 | Beijing | The Forbidden City, Great Wall, hutongs, Peking duck. The most complete China experience. | 4 to 5 |
| 2 | Xi’an | Terracotta Warriors (one of the world’s great archaeological sites). Muslim Quarter food. Cycleable city wall. | 2 to 3 |
| 3 | Shanghai | The Bund, French Concession, best restaurant scene in China. Good day trips (Hangzhou 45 min). | 3 to 4 |
| 4 | Chengdu | Giant Panda Base, Sichuan hotpot, People’s Park teahouse culture. Relaxed pace. | 3 to 4 |
| 5 | Guilin and Yangshuo | Li River karst landscape. Countryside cycling. Genuinely beautiful. | 3 to 4 |
| 6 | Guangzhou | The birthplace of dim sum. Less visited than it deserves. 47 min from Hong Kong. | 2 |
| 7 | Hangzhou | West Lake (UNESCO). Longjing tea. Best day trip from Shanghai or overnight from Beijing. | 1 to 2 |
| 8 | Chongqing | The 8D city. Beef tallow hotpot. Most dramatic Chinese city at night. | 2 |
Why Beijing Is First
No other Chinese city puts more history in front of you in a smaller area. The Forbidden City alone is a full day. The Temple of Heaven and Jingshan Park are a half day. A hutong neighborhood walk is a morning. The Great Wall (Mutianyu, 2 hours north) is a full day. You could spend a week in Beijing and leave having only seen the surface. For first-time visitors, three to four nights is enough for the highlights without the diminishing returns that come with staying longer. Full guide: Beijing Travel Guide.
Why Xi’an Is Underrated
Xi’an consistently ranks below Shanghai and Chengdu in popularity among Western tourists despite having one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world. The Terracotta Warriors at 8:30am on a weekday, before tour groups from Xian hotels arrive, is an experience that requires no hyperbole. Add the Muslim Quarter at night, the cycleable city wall, and the one-hour G-train to Hua Shan mountain, and Xi’an deserves more time than most itineraries give it. Full guide: Xian Travel Guide.
