North Peak cable car from east base: 10 minutes, ¥80 one way. From North Peak walk the ridge between the five peaks. The plank walk section is between South and West Peak. Genuinely exposed. Optional.
Overnight (the real version)
Take the 6 or 7pm G-train from Xi’an. Hike by headlamp from 9pm (4 hours to summit). Sleep on North or East Peak guesthouse (¥100 to ¥200, book ahead). Watch sunrise from the East Peak. Descend by cable car. Back in Xi’an by noon. This is the most commonly recommended experience in Xi’an travel forums. The recommendation is correct.
Pingyao: The Underrated One
Pingyao is a Ming dynasty commercial town with original city walls, original street layout, and original courtyard houses. It was the center of Chinese banking in the 19th century. The UNESCO World Heritage listing covers the old town. High-speed train: 2 to 2.5 hours from Xi’an North. If you can stay one night: do. Pingyao at 7am before tour groups is one of the most atmospheric places in China.
