1. Is Guilin or Zhangjiajie more spectacular?

Zhangjiajie is more visually dramatic. Guilin is more accessible and more liveable. Zhangjiajie's pillar formations are unlike any landscape on Earth. Guilin's karst scenery and the Li River cycling experience is more gently beautiful and easier to enjoy at any pace.

2. Can I visit both Guilin and Zhangjiajie in one trip?

Yes. They are in the same general region of southern/central China, separated by about 500 km. G-train between Guilin North and Changsha South (2.5 hours) then from Changsha to Zhangjiajie West (3 hours). Allow a day for the transit.

3. How many days do each need?

Guilin and Yangshuo: 3 nights minimum (1 night Guilin/cruise, 2 nights Yangshuo). Zhangjiajie: 3 days minimum (2 in the national forest park, 1 on Tianmen Mountain). Both are best not rushed.

4. Which is better for photographers?

Both are exceptional for different reasons. Guilin in April mist looks like classical Chinese ink painting. Zhangjiajie in cloud looks like CGI. If you can only choose one for photography: Zhangjiajie has the more otherworldly shots.

5. Is either suitable for travelers who cannot hike?

Guilin/Yangshuo yes: cycling is flat and the Li River cruise requires no hiking. Zhangjiajie partially: cable cars access the summit areas but you will still walk 15,000+ steps even using every cable car.
